Internet Resources for Patients and Their Families

The following online resources provide good starting points for individuals diagnosed with or concerned about breast cancer diagnosis, breast cancer treatment, and breast cancer survivorship.

ASBD Patient Resource Directory
The ASBD Patient Resource Directory provides individuals seeking specific contact information on healthcare professionals specializing in breast disease or breast cancer with quick access to information on members of the American Society of Breast Disease.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer provides educational programs, audiotapes, CDs, and interactive message boards to help those diagnosed with breast cancer to live well following their diagnosis. You can also sign up for LBBC's free mailing list to receive their quarterly educational newsletter and mailings.

The Komen Foundation focuses its grant efforts on research projects with potential for high impact that may not be considered by other agencies. The Komen Foundation awards project grants and fellowships in basic, clinical and translational research. In addition to research on a national and international level, Komen Affiliates fund non-duplicative, community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved.

MAMM magazine is both a print and online source of information for women diagnosed with breast or reproductive cancers.

The National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations closed its doors in May 2004 after nearly 18 years in operation. The ASBD congratulates Amy Langer and the NABCO organization for its contributions to improving information about breast cancer.

The National Breast Cancer Coalition is a grassroots advocacy effort in the fight against breast cancer. In 1991, the Coalition was established with the goal to eradicate breast cancer through action and advocacy

Founded in 1978, Y-ME is a national organization with affiliate partners in 27 cities throughout the United States.

The Young Survival Coalition is the only international, non-profit network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to the concerns and issues that are unique to women under 40 with breast cancer


Hurricane Katrina Information

The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service (CIS) has a toll-free number for U.S. residents as an additional contact point for oncologists and cancer patients. Call 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237). CIS information specialists answer calls Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time, in English or Spanish. Callers with TTY equipment may call 1-800-332-8615.

For patients on NCI-sponsored clinical trials - and doctors who are asked to treat cancer patients who have been on an NCI-sponsored trial - NCI has established a phone number to call, 301-496-5725. This line will be answered from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. After hours and on weekends, callers can leave a message and an NCI employee will respond within an hour.
