The American Society of Breast Disease is the only professional medical society in the United States that welcomes all healthcare professionals involved in the prevention, early detection, treatment and research of breast disease and advocacy of a multidisciplinary team approach to breast health management.
The Society was founded in 1976 by a group of gynecologists who recognized that proper treatment of breast disease requires comprehensive management. This multidisciplinary approach involves:

Membership is open to professionals and organizations involved in breast disease care and research.
Members are encouraged to get involved through national committee service. ASBD committees include: Education Program Committee, Membership Committee, Nominating Committee, Communications Committee, Public Policy Committee, Consensus Committee and Outreach and Special Populations Committee. A Rapid Response Panel provides opportunities for members to directly advise the Board of Directors on key Society issues.
There are four membership groups: Professional Memberships, Candidate Memberships, Nonprofit Organizational Membership and Corporate Memberships.
Professional membership is available to individual healthcare professionals providing breast care services or with an interest in breast disease care or research.
Candidate membership is open to any individual who is currently enrolled in an approved health care training program. Upon completion of his/her training program, the candidate may apply for full professional membership within one year.
Nonprofit organizations involved in breast disease care and research, complying with section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue code of 1954, as amended, or the corresponding provision of any future United States Internal Revenue law, are also eligible for membership.
Corporate memberships are open to organizations and businesses related to breast
healthcare.
Since the ASBD does not certify persons or organizations, no member may cite membership as evidence of professional competence
At the discretion of the Board of Directors, honorary memberships recognized individuals for their outstanding contribution to breast care or research.

Dues for 2008 are $225 for MDs and PhDs and $115 for nurses, students, interns and residents. Fellows in recognized multidisciplinary breast fellowship programs receive complimentary membership during their fellowship.
